Looking for a heart-healthy activity other than exercise? Meditate!

While the overall effects of  meditation on our health are continuing to be explored, numerous studies have already shown it may impact our risk of cardiovascular disease. In one of the more promising articles – published in the American Journal of Cardiology – researchers analyzed results from two studies that included 202 older adults with mildly elevated blood pressure. The group was split into two groups,  either transcendental meditation (TM) or another stress-reduction technique, such as progressive muscle relaxation. What they found was that the benefits of meditation are not only good for the heart, but may make for a longer life as well. The men and women who practiced TM were 30 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease over the next eight years compared to their peers and their risk of dying from any cause was 23 percent lower!
